As much as HMV stores may be nice I always loved visiting the really big Virgin Megastores store in Dublin…..awful shame they shutdown and its now a supervalue store, or I’m pretty sure its supervalue,

Of course Virgin Megastores also has a place in Irish history for selling condoms and getting into alot of trouble over it in the very early 90′s,

I think it’s sad, first vinyl, tapes and now CDs , no more record stores. :(

I remember 2 weeks ago when I tried to return a gift and they wouldn’t give me money for it, only a gift voucher. Which they now wont accept even though they are still trading. Ah good memories. also, Bastards.

All credit to HMV but when they came on the scene they were responsible for dozens of small record shops closing down so what goes around…

Hard to feel too saddened by the demise of a business which ignored it’s problems and continued to sell gift cards at the busiest time of year, knowing full well that they probably wouldn’t be in a position to honor them in the new year.

Pity about the job losses, but no sympathy or sentimentality from me about the chain going belly-up.

I love all these people talking about spending hours browsing CDs/DVDs etc – how many people bought from there?

I think it’s sad that people are losing their jobs but the only time I (and I suspect many others) find themselves in actual CD/DVD/Games shops is at Christmas time when you’re panicking because you didn’t buy anything for your dad.

I still prefer to own the physical media be it cd or Blu-ray, as for online retailers play.com seem to be either going out of business or being rebranded so even that model isn’t safe!

In a somewhat related matter the government should send a letter to the French government abou HMV as the French government were blaming Irish corporate tax rate for Virgin France going last week. Tax rate isn’t the reason for Music stoees going bust, technology and their prices are the reason. Now Mr. Noonan as Minister for Finance do your job on behalf of your country and let France know.

It isn’t closing, it’s going into administration. Hopefully the administrators can rescue it.

I think its inevitable. Lets face it downloads are the future legal or otherwise. Not getting into downloads issues or legalities but everyone i know downloads music and films now.

I remember on visits to Dublin in my late teens jetting over and back between HMV in Henry Street and the Virgin Megastore to buy music or videos that couldn’t be bought outside the capital (or at least a major city). Very happy memories and sad to think the second of those great institutions may soon be history :-(

Where am I going to Queue for hours for a DVD nobody wants on December 23? Or where am I going to browse DVD’s that I am going to download? Or even worse, Where am I going to get my new release PS3 games five quid cheaper than Gamestop on release day ?

An awful soulless place with overpriced crap, mostly games of late. Not really a place for music lovers.

Nearly brought a read to my eye. Loved the Henry street and grafton street stores. Many a lost day in there.

Is this an ad for HMV? I used to love the fact that HMV (Humanitarian Music Vendor) would allow me to part with almost £30 punts, in return for a single disc. Ahh, discs, remember those? You’d put one on and hope it wasn’t scratched, but it was of course. That’s what they do, they deteriorate and scratch easy. “Please Sir, could I have one more?” CHACHING!!!

Downloading and the Internet shopping is only going to become more prevalent in the years to come. The survival of the fittest will ensure that ultimately only ITunes will survive as our music content provider. Amazon will unlikely be in the space once physical sales fall away completely. When illegal downloading is tackled properly (and it will very soon), dont be surprised if we start to a rise in costs in music back upwards for new release product. If ITunes are the only reliant content provider what will stop them upping their charges?

I have went to hmv for the last 20 years .every week I would go get the latest blue ray and latest music CDs .this is a terrible thing to happen .firstly for the people that will lose there jobs and the second there s no really other place to go for blue ray which I bought ,tesco or any other supermarket don’t really sell blueray .i hope they find a buyer for the shops so the people can keep there jobs.

Sad to see HMV’s demise. When I was a nipper it was my favourite place in the world. They were my Madonna dealer. I feel sorry for the kids who’ll never experience the joy of a record store with a tenner in your pocket.

Golden Discs are far better when it comes to customer service and they usually have a better range and if they don’t have what you are looking for, they will order it for you. Whereas HMV computer says NO.

What’s this starry-eyed nostalgia rubbish?

What I remember was a fairly badly stocked, pretty useless record shop that was a big part of killing all those independent record shops that had character and enthusiasm for the music they stocked.

Bah, saw a few days ago that Play.com are pulling out of direct retail sales and thought ‘ah well, sure at least there’s a HVM in the shopping centre’. Doh.
