  • I get the distinct impression that if bono were to give away ALL of his money and stop lobbying for good causes there would still be a queue of people wanting to have a pop at him. They’d probably say he gave it to the wrong people.

  • I have only just moved to Dublin in the last 3 months and stuff like this never happens where I came from. It was great craic to be amongst it all. Sorry about the poor quality of my video, I was trying to hold my 3 year old up with my other arm

What was quite nice was that Desire was the first song I ever learnt to play on the guitar.

There’s a simple question of morality and hypocrisy when it comes to Bono : someone who doesn’t pay his fair share in his home country has no standing to hold himself out as being genuinely concerned with the welfare of the less fortunate, either here or in Africa. Shameless, jumped-up, self-aggrandising little charlatan.

You, my friend, do not have a clue.

What Bono does is …he constantly talks about the issues, such as poverty, AIDS, healthcare, etc, ths motivating , involving more people, more donations… If you would take a few minutes of your time and actually read about it, you would realize how much this man has done for those in need. And continues to do so every single day, including this very Christmas Eve! Why is it so hard to learn the facts before judging… Merry Christmas to all of you! :)

Ah, sure why don’t we offer him a sainthood… The chap is a tax evader. His music is purely about business. The charity work he does is only for publicity. All he ever talks about is the aids epidemic and hunger in Africa, something he knows he’s not going to make even the slightest impact on. He knows if he keeps at it he will be given awards. And awards mean publicity. Exactly what every business strives for, awards, business and money.

and so does everyone else, now hand over a few million and let there less talk and more action.
talking won’t help a homeless and hungry person on the street tonight. if i read in the media tomorrow that he gave 1 million to help the Simon Community this year as they’re now pushed to the limit, then i’d say ‘fair play’ but no let us have more talk and singing. they say the more you have the less you give, true in this case apart from more talk i.e. a load of crap talk and media attention.

It’s the band that have moved accounts to holland for tax purposes. I’m not a huge U2 fan, but I’m a fan of u2s representation of Ireland abroad.

Exactly! The amount of people that spout the usual rubbish of “bono doesn’t pay tax”! Its the biggest urban myth going! Of course he pays tax on his personal income in this country!

U2 “the company” have their publishing company in Holland, just like many other multi nationals have bases in Ireland for the exact same reason! We’re such a nation of bitter begrudgers!

Fair play to Bono for his charity work… If he can influence people to help or highlight an issue, that’s a good thing!

Class act. Also, it’s Glens thing. He organises it, gets it going and stays there for three to four hours. Bono appears for three songs and disappears into the night. Really good to see our home-grown musicians out and about, and the crowd having the same banter and singalong with them.

We have a talented and world-renowned bunch in Ireland, but part of me is still glad that we’re a small enough country that if one of them turns up to busk or do a small gig we can still appreciate that, too.

If he wanted to make money for homeless charities in Dublin he could do so a lot more efficiently in other ways… busking for 15 minutes isn’t going to take too many off the streets. The people that busk in Dublin routinely already do this every year.. they donate what they earn on Christmas Eve to charities of their choice… most of them do it quietly and without drawing attention to the fact. They achieve it because people passing by are generally filed with goodwill around Christmas time, and so give more generously.

Bono playing every year on Grafton Street won’t raise awareness for or improve the lives of the homeless people of the city… it’ll raise awareness of the fact that Bono plays on Grafton Street every year. People will turn up because it’s him and donate also for that fact, while buskers and performers who have been doing the same for years will be more neglected as a result.

I don’t think saying that is begrudging him or the cause.

      Reply
    • I wonder does he claim it against tax, sorry my mistake………

The fact it’s on The Journal this evening, reminded me that there ARE people sleeping rough tonight. Regardless of who it is busking, it’s a positive. Who cares about what taxes are paid, seriously, there are far more problems in his country, then the amount of tax Bono pays! Merry Christmas all.

Well once people remember them they have nothing to worry about. How many people will sleep soundly in bed tonight because awareness about homeless people has ever so slightly increased. Being ‘aware’ of something isn’t a form of charity. It’s a stupid modern and memetic form of ignorance if anything.

These breaks were introduced by the Haughey government years ago. These are facts. In any case U2 only have to pay tax in Ireland on what they earn in Ireland and clearly they do that. All I see is envy (because Bono is rich and doesn’t give all his money away, the b*stard, how dare he?) and people saying he doesn’t do enough…Would any of you give 5% of your money to charity? “Let him who is without sin among you be the first to throw a stone at [him].” So before you act like you can judge others who actually do something (even though it may have side effects like publicity, no doubt about that), do the same first (within your own means of course). I bet any homeless guy who got a hot soup or a blanket from the money collected last night will not complain that Bono should pay his taxes, as if that would undo all the homelessness in Ireland…

Lets see the billionaire put his hand in his pocket and give to the homeless until it hurts i.e. an amount he will notice missing from his bank acc. the next time he checks it.
Or would that be asking too much Bono? Is the security that all that money provides just too attractive to ever contemplate giving a large chunk of it to charity ? The rich celebs. always remind me of the Bible story of the rich man who was challenged by Jesus to give his riches to the poor and follow him. He walked away a sad man. The lure of the money was just too much. Little wonder that Jesus then proclaimed ” How hard it is for a rich man to enter the kingdom of Heaven”

But if an Irish company moves for that reason then it’s a disgrace?? Why slag of these artists, they could also have beenat home with their families, but no, they make time for this.
