I was told by my tech type friend that 80%+ of problems are solved by restarting it… I still give it the quick kick/slap just incase though!

The more complex a device is, the more likely the old Offey-Oney is likely to sort out any problems the device is manifesting.

Its actually very good advice, nearly always fix’s an i-phone issue

The basic premise of this is that if they have a problem on the network end you need to disconnect from the network to update the fix, hence turn it off and back on.

Turn it off and back on again fixes everything. If that doesn’t work then assume that the device is fecked….

i have been told before when having issues with service form o2 that i should turn my phone off and back on again at least once a week!!….. when i asked why?…. i was simply told…”it’s good for your phone”….!!!

I doubt turning it off\on actually fixed it for this particular issue.
If you make any changes on the wider network you have to reboot the device so it can download the new settings and changes made from the network…some devices won’t download them automatically

Why this got featured as a news item is beyond me. Asking users to switch off/on a device is a perfectly common IT procedure.

I’m a software engineer myself, very rare that I actually use an IT call centre unless I know something is really fecked.

Like in my last company, my laptop hard-drive cracked, so I had to ring the IT service desk in order to convince them to take it in for a hard-drive replacement. Even after I told them it was PHYSICALLY cracked, they told me to turn it off and on again, eh… no mate, that won’t work on me!
