This is what Thanksgiving dinner in space looks like

Irradiated smoked turkey, anyone?

TODAY, MILLIONS OF Americans will celebrate Thanksgiving by gorging on grand turkey feasts and some curious dishes that we can’t quite wrap our heads around. (Frog eye salad, anyone?)

For the astronauts stationed on the International Space Station, however, Thanksgiving dinner looks a little like this.

And here’s a more appetising photo courtesy of everyone’s favourite astronaut Chris Hadfield.

In a blog post on Tuesday, NASA stated today’s menu would include “irradiated smoked turkey, thermostabilized candied yams and freeze-dried green beans and mushrooms” while astronauts would enjoy a desert of “thermostabilized cherry-blueberry cobbler”.

They can then wash it all down with powdered tea with sugar and lemon.

According to NASA’s Space Station Food System Manager Vickie Kloeris, the meal took a grand total of eighteen months to prepare and will not require any ovens or hobs to cook.

Instead the astronauts only need to add hot water and, hey presto, the food is done.

And really, wouldn’t that make Christmas so much easier?
