OK, SO WE’RE only a little island, next to a slightly bigger island, on the other side of the world.
But this seems like a rookie error all the same. The National Press Club in Washington DC – a private club for journalists in the US capital – sent out invites to a party marking the launch of the 2012 London Olympics.
And according to The Guardian, the invitation read:
In honor of the host nation, the menu for the evening will be fish and chips and Guinness.
I mean, come on. If the billions that (ahem, international conglomerate) Diageo pour into marketing Guinness are worth anything, it should be to get across one message: THIS DRINK IS IRISH.
Have they not seen the heartwarming ad where the young fella in the US visits the seamy underworld to get his auld da tickets to the All-Ireland Final?
Do they not remember… this?

We guess not. Anyway, the public invitation to the event looks like it may have been altered – it now proposes a vague menu of “beer, wine and soft drink choices”.
Should someone tell them that what British people really enjoy is warm, flat ale?
