VIDEO: Notre Dame’s marching band plays ‘Call Me Maybe’ in Dublin

The Fighting Irish’s marching band was one of the star attractions at the Aviva Stadium yesterday.

IRISH EYES – both of the native and Fighting kind – were smiling yesterday as the University of Notre Dame took an easy win over Navy in the Emerald Isle Classic in Dublin.

While the Notre Dame outfit smashed their rivals by 50 points to 10, one of the star attractions of the day was the Fighting Irish’s marching band – the oldest collegiate band in continual existence in the United States.

While their main performance was a half-time show with many Irish and American favourites, the band also had a key role in ensuring that the Notre Dame alumni and fans remained in fine voice – thanks in no small part to the efforts of the 200-strong ensemble in the stadium’s south stand.

Rarely stopping from beginning to end of the three-and-a-half hour game, here’s just one sample of their incredible efforts.

Was at the match yesterday great atmosphere and great crowd would be brilliant if this was a regular occurrence our friends from America couldn’t compliment AVIVA stadium and their staff enough they have promised to return back again next year. Bit of a disappointment for them as they are Navy… But they’re Irish decent so small consolation

  • The begrudgers hate to see people enjoy themselves and , by extension, overlook how much extra temporary employment it created and also the money brought into the country. They would be the first to shout we’re taxes raised or services cut. Get down off that horse.

  • Was sitting right beside the band! They are only between a quarter and a third of the full compliment! pretty impressive and everything that the Americans organised was brilliant!! Free buses to Aviva, lots of directional signs etc. Aviva staff bit disorganised ran out of hotdogs in our section before half time, long queues etc. However what a day amazing! atmosphere brilliant and it must be said the Americans really know how to put on a show!

  • Ah ya gotta love the bitter bus brigade…It’s great for our country that it was played here. There was a great atmosphere again in town yesterday. And a lot of Americans were going to see the Dublin game today. Over all. the last few months in Ireland has been great with the events that have been on. hopefully we get a lot more.

Was at the game yesterday – one of the best sporting days I’ve ever experienced! So much going on in the crowd too so didn’t get bored when the game stopped and started. Lovely day and would highly recommend attending if you ever get a chance.

  • Im not a troll, but I fail to see the attraction of this taking place in Ireland, what’s the big deal? Just because it Notre Dame? Is this going to be an annual event?

    • It’s not annual – the two teams play ever year, alternating home venue between the two. Navy’s home ground holds about 30,000 but given that the rivalry is so intense and has such a large fan following (Notre Dame’s stadium alone holds about 80,000) Navy traditionally play their ‘home’ game at venues around the USA and occasionally elsewhere. It was in Croke Park in 1996.

This was a huge event for Ireland, apart from the tourists who came in for the game, this was on TV all across the US.

There were loads of drop in pieces about Ireland & Dublin throughout the coverage.

We should see uplift in tourism numbers from it & should be looking at hosting a game from other colleges or possibly even NFL/AFL every year.

We also need to get the likes of LA Galaxy over for a game & if a suitable venue could be found, a baseball game.

      Great work by all involved.

    • Falstasf, I dunno. What is the attraction of anything being held anywhere? Does the fact that it was held and thousands of people showed up and had a great time mean anything to you?
Asides from getting out of bed and wiping your arse, what are you bringing to the world today???
