Irish songwriter pens Eurovision entry for… Romania

Karl Broderick wrote Twilight as a nod to the popular book and film series of the same name.

IRISH SONGWRITER AND panto producer Karl Broderick hsa penned a Eurovision song – but it wasn’t for the Irish entry.

Instead, his song Twilight has been chosen as one of the finalists to represent Romania in this year’s Eurovision song contest.

His inspiration? Vampires and Transylvania.

Writer and producer Broderick explained more:

I didn’t even enter the song into the Irish selection because I believed Jedward’s huge fanbase would secure them a win, so I entered Twilight into Romania’s contest. The song is a nod to the popular films of the same name, about vampires, so I thought it would be interesting to send the song to the home of Transylvania. They came third two years ago.

Broderick, who is the partner of TV3′s Alan Hughes, said he does feel like the underdog but is hopeful he will do well:

I really do feel like the underdog as it’s a public phone vote and jury vote and unfortunately I don’t have many friends or family to pick up the phone in Romania, but the song has gotten a huge boost by Romania’s popular X factor finalists, T & L, agreeing to be the performers.

They will compete in the live finals in Bucharest this Saturday, 10 March.

This isn’t the first Eurovision entry Broderick has written – he also wrote Love? for brother and sister duo Joe and Donna McCaul, who represented Ireland with the song in 2005.

The songwriter said it would be great to get through to the Eurovision and compete against Jedward in the first semi final, as it “would be great fun as I’m a fan of the lads”.

He added:

As Ireland can’t vote for ourselves it would be fantastic for Ireland to vote for Romania and we’ll get all of Romania to vote for Jedward.
