Irish people can save the most cash by being good during Lent, say statistics

If you give up drink, cigarettes, fast food, coffee and sweets you could save around €550.

IRISH PEOPLE CAN save more money than practically anyone else by giving things up for Lent, according to figures in The Economist.

The magazine looked at 20 cities around the world to examine the potential savings if residents gave up booze, cigarettes, fast food, coffee and sweets.

Dublin topped the chart. The compilers calculated that if a Dubliners gave up all of the above for 40 days, he or she could save more than $750 (550).

Second – but only just – came Zurich in Switzerland, followed by London, New York and Venezuela’s capital Caracas.

The cheapest city surveyed was Buenos Aires in Argentina, where the potential saving was a relatively paltry $240 (€170).

The figures were calculated on the basis of someone giving up 20 cigarettes a day, two bottles of wine a week, a bottle of beer every day, two fast food meals a week, two cups of coffee a day and one daily cup of hot chocolate – which researchers used as a proxy for chocolate bars.
