@Paul we got the iodine tabs ok but as there was 5 of us in the house we decided instead of arm wrestling in the front garden for them we,d 1/2 them in that way we,d be only 1/2 dead.
seriously i remember that booklet and allways remember the pic,s of the guy walking down the road with his briefcase if i remember correctly the instructions were if he could see the blast he was to lie on the ground facing away from the blast with his briefcaseover his head&neck and this would save him from death.

The US for example as part of their active arsenal limited by treaty to 2500 (but probably not that little) have 450 Minuteman III ICBM which each carry three 170 kiloton warheads that can be aimed at three different places at once. Each of those 450 Inter Continental Ballistic Missiles have 10 times the destruction power of Hiroshima
In the movie the exchange was based on 3000 kilotons that’s ten of those Minuteman III from each side of the war.
The UK scenario in the movie was based on the force of just two of those Minuteman IIIs or 280 kilotons.

There are 18 of these in active service in the US and UK navies.
Each carry four 475 kiloton warheads with a range of 11, 500 km

Its crazy when you think about it
A 150 kiloton weapon can obliterate 50,000 sqaure km, The entire landmass of the world is 150, 000, 000 square km.
So 3000 of these bombs can obliterate the world and that doesnt even take into account radiation sickness, fallout and all the rest.
There are enough nuclear weapons in active service to destroy the world many times over.

I have seen Threads and it is a terrifying thought provoking BBC production. It is worrying to see so many other countries looking to develop nuclear weapons in what they see as a defensive measure. The likelihood of a nuclear war of some kind is probably more likely in the future as more countries develop this destructive technology. There is a documentary called Countdown to Zero that deals with the scenario of a terrorist organisation getting their hands on a device and using it in a major city, a chilling prospect. All these weapons need to be decommissioned as their very existence is a crime against humanity, unfortunately there is very little prospect of that happening.

Keep your panties on people..Dont forget RUSSIA still has just as many nukes ans well,and not as much under control as the US.The Russians still dont know how many of theirs are actually there or have been dismantled or walked out the door in the last days of the Soviet Union.
But anyway, its old hat now…If anyone wants to wipe out say 23 million Americans for the price of one average cobbled together nuke bom,a couple of SCUD missles built into a two stage rocket and an old freighter ship as a launch pad.It could be done with a EMP bomb..Thats an Electro Magnetical Pulse bomb, No destroyed cities,or massive casualties or radioactive fallout.Just a bright flash about 25 miles up and our civilisation has stepped into the 19th century again.It destroys all our unprotected micro chip circutry..which is 99% of the micro circurty in the world.Everything stops dead,and our society collapses slowly .
#If you really want to know what it would be like..I suggest the book “ONE Second After”,by William Fortenschen. Puts Threads,The Day After and Testament and all the “we are all gonna die no matter what.” 80s films in the penny ante leauge.

If I was in Iran watching Western policies in the Afghan and Iraqi zones I’d be ‘tooling up’ too.

Threads worried the living sh*te out of me when it was first shown. Don’t know why, I should have known better, I was old enough. Straight from the “vehicle safety / anti-smoking advert” school of TV production. Where The Wind Blows was also disturbing. Being told that this was essentially enviable and it was only a choice of a slow horrible death, an even slower more horrible death or, worst of the worst, actually surviving and stuck in a nuclear winter, it was probably the reason for the continued popularity of the gothic look…

The point was not to engender fear, but to prevent panic by suggesting that a nuclear explosion was survivable. I am old, and our booklet advised us school kids to get under our desks and assume the crash position!

I remember that book. It advised people to paint the glass in the windows white and hide under the stairs. We were advised to keep a three weeks supply of food at all times. There were tips on what type of food to hoard and how to stop water becoming contaminated. Scary stuff to a child, it was issued about 1961 during the Cuban missle crisis.
