Graham Norton wins British Comedy award

Image: Ian West/PA Wire

IRISH CHAT SHOW host Graham Norton has won a British Comedy award. Norton, originally from Bandon, Co Cork, took the Best Comedy Entertainment Personality award at the ceremony in London.

Norton beat Alan Carr, Charlie Brooker and Harry Hill to win his category. He had also been nominated in the King or Queen of Comedy section but that was won by comedian Sarah Millican. Norton had a great deal of success at these particular awards at the start of the Noughties when he won the Best Comedy Entertainment Personality award in 2000 and 2002, Best Comedy Entertainment Programme in 2001 for So Graham Norton and in 2002 for V Graham Norton. Last night’s win is his first at the British Comedy awards since then.

Last night’s major prizes went to Have I Got News For You for Lifetime Achievement, to The Inbetweeners for Outstanding Achievement, to Lee Evans for Special Contribution to Comedy and Armando ‘The Thick of It’ Iannucci for the Writers’ Guild of Great Britain award.

The full list of winners are on the British Comedy awards this morning.

We still like how he managed to get the most sense and information anyone has ever got out of Jedward in this clip from the Graham Norton Show in 2009 (They start to make sense at around 1:10)

He had an unfair advantage in the king or queen of comedy category.

He was mildly funny in Father Ted. Now, he’s just mildly annoying.

Graham Norton and Jedward on the one page displays exactly what’s wrong with modern life – people becoming famous and wealthy by having absolutely no talent whatsoever.

Amazing! An Irish person gets a major award for work in their field and straight away the begrudger’s are out. No wonder the country is knackered when people can only moan at someone else’s success instead of applauding it. You might not like them yourself but at least acknowledge their achievements.

Very true Brian, awful lot of begrudgery around. Have to say i started out not liking graham norton finding him a bit too over the top, but starting giving his show a chance recently and its genuinely entertaining, more luck to him

Not begrudging him Brian. Just expressing my opinion that I don’t find him funny. We are surely entitled to express our views on here, right?

I’ve no problem with anything you’ve said Brian apart from one thing, and it’s something that I’m seeing more and more every day and it’s getting more and more f*&king annoying….. this “no wonder the country is etc etc etc” bullshit, can we please give that a rest?

To be fair Kieron I think that it is fair comment as it seems to be the attitude of a lot of people. What I find annoying is that everyone seems to be blaming bankers and TD’s for just about everything from the countries woes to natural disasters! There has always been in the Irish psyche a pathological need to put someone down just because they have done well. Personally I can’t stand Jedward, the annoy the he’ll out of me, are half my age and have probably made more money in the last 2 years than I have in 20 years but I still was cheering them on on the Eurovision. My point is that if instead of putting people down and started being a bit more supportive of success it would do us all the world of good.

As for you Declan, are you turning your profile pic into some sort of Advent calendar or what? I’ll have to look for a new pic myself just to keep up with the season that’s in it. :-)

I know where u are coming from re the Irish negativity, but Graham N has become a bit annoying recently. I don’t begrudge him his success. Fair play to him. Same for Jedward. I was actually delighted for them at Eurovision. However, GN is becoming a bit past tense now. I look forward to your Xmas pics, Brian.

GN is superb, we should be very proud of him . It’s disappointing to see the disregard for him here. It’s beyond taste in humour, I think a few thick micks can’t accept his background as a prod or as a gay man. Grow up boys , he is as Irish as any of us.

Rather watch an Irish presenter on an English channel than the Irish twats on the Irish channels.

Fair play to him. The guests on his show appear to want to be there and even enjoy themselves. What a contrast with The Late Late, all the guests want is the cheque.

I do like his show. But i still have a bit of a grievance from when he did his show during the 02 world cup. He had his whole set decorated in England flags. He kept referencing England as we. Ireland were also in that world cup. ok his paymasters are English, but still.

Graham Norton is the best chat show host on telly at the minute, nobody else comes close – am really glad he won this comedy award! How did Sarah Millican win the Queen of comedy award she just isn’t funny, not even in the slightest!

Fair play to Graham. When he started out he had a knack (we’re used to it now) of saying ANYTHING to anyone with a very cheeky grin so he got away with it. That was different to the usual fawning we were used to seeing from presenters. Very funny & refreshing.

I must say I LOVE LOVE LOVE Have I got News for you. I’ve only ever missed 3 actuals shows from all the series down the years. (i know – SAD) so I’m absolutely delighted for them. Brilliant Brilliant funny show
