THERE IS NO denying it, cat videos are a thing of beauty. They can be weird, violent and sometimes a little terrifying but I challenge any of you readers to watch one cat video without getting sucked in.
Well Google have already set this challenge, but not for a human brain; that’s not the Google way. The company has created an artificial brain with 16,000 computer processors to create a brain-like ‘neural network’ with over a billion connections, and gave it access to an internet connection, the Daily Mail reports.
The computer brain was fed random stills from some 10 million YouTube videos and was then given free reign to ‘learn’ by itself.
You may expect the Google brain to interact with the internet in a new and enlightening way but instead it reacted just like the rest of our mortal brains. It focused on the cat videos.
Google’s Dr Jeff Dean, who led the team that created the artificial brain, said they never told it what a cat was and it basically invented the concept of a cat.
They proved it is possible to train a face detector without having to label images as containing a face or not, according to the team’s paper, published this week.
They also found that the same network is sensitive to other high level concepts such as cat faces and human bodies.
We at TheJournal.ie love a good cat video, so here are our five favourite…
