IT’S EASY TO imagine that celebrities just plopped right down into the public eye fully formed.
But believe it or not, all the luminaries we now hold so dear once had a very different careers and life paths.
1. Dana Rosemary Scanlon
From this… Saccharine-sweet Eurovision pop sensation:
To this… A elected MEP, a general election hopeful and an Irish Presidential candidate:
Do you think anyone in 1970 would have guessed Scanlan’s career trajectory? We think not, somehow.
2. Mickey Rourke
Mickey Rourke is a classic case of life imitating art imitating life. He could arguably have stolen the title of his generation’s James Dean – up with with acting luminaries like Paul Newman and Robert DeNiro – but instead he jacked it all in to become a professional boxer.
After six years of pummelling he was back to acting. And his most celebrated role recently? The Wrestler. It all comes full circle.
3. Paul Scholes
On the face of it, a footballer moving from the pitch to punditry isn’t really all that shocking a departure. However, Paul Scholes was known for one thing during his sporting career and that was silence. And yet, get him behind a desk in the studio and he won’t zip it…
4. Brian Cox
Remember D:Ream? Showing our age here. They were the mid-90s band that gifted the world the UK #1 Things Can Only Get Better. And things did indeed get better for the group’s keyboardist, Brian Cox – he reached for the stars and went on to become Professor of Particle Physics in the Universty of Manchester. He’s arguably one of the world’s most famous cosmologists. Not half bad, eh?
5. Arnie
Arnold Schwarzenegger could be said to have “pulled a Dana” (phrase coined just now, by us), as he too transcended the limelight of Mr Universe and Hollywood and moved into the world of politics becoming California’s The Governator.
Come to think of it, Reagan “pulled a Dana” too. Nice job, guys.
6. Madonna
Before finding fame, Madonna once worked in a donut shop. Why did she not follow this career path? Well… She was fired for squirting jam filling all over a customer. Respect, Madonna. Respect.
Barry Barrington, from Barry’s Driving School, had a similar experience. He was cast as a driving instructor in an EBS commercial – but he found he actually kind of liked being a driving instructor. So he gave up very occasionally treading the boards and opened up, wait for it, his own driving school.
Will it work? Will success enfold him its loving arms? Time will tell. Find out at barrysdrivingschool9-5.com.
