Dentist offers children money and toothbrushes for Halloween sweets

Dentist Craig Callen will offer kids $1 for every pound of candy they bring in.

AN OHIO DENTIST is offering to buy kids’ trick-or-treating booty this Halloween, and he’s even throwing in a toothbrush to sweeten the deal.

The Mansfield News Journal reports that dentist Craig Callen and his associates are offering kids $1 per pound of candy they bring in, with a 5-pound limit per child.

The dentists are also holding a draw for two children’s bikes.

Callen says brushing teeth and visiting a dentist are good preventive measures, but doing away with excess sweets would give teeth a healthy boost.

Callen says candy can lead to hyperactivity and weight gain and can be especially damaging to children’s braces.

  • Kids will just use the money that they get to buy more sweets. This is just another form of bribery, children should rather be educated about eating too much candy or drinking sweet, fizzy drinks.

    • Completely agree. The more you tell a child they can’t have something the more they’ll want it. They should be told about the risks and then it’s up to the parents to take over and not let them have all the sweets at once.

  • I’m from Ireland, working at a dental office in Pennsylvania, we do a similar “candy buy back” every year, kids give us more of the excessive stuff they get and we pay $1 per pound but in turn send the candy to the military men and women serving over seas, the kids love it and really dont turn around and buy more candy at all.
