Irish dad describes shock after wife gives birth on pedestrian crossing

She was trying to hail a taxi in New York at the time.

A SURPRISED MOTHER and her newborn daughter are doing well after the baby girl made a surprise entrance on a busy street.

The open-air birth happened on Monday afternoon on Manhattan’s Upper East Side. The baby’s father, a Dubliner, has described his shock at witnessing the events.

According to Fox 5 News, Polly McCourt left her building to go to the hospital and her doorman tried to hail a taxi for her. But the baby couldn’t wait, and McCourt lowered herself onto the ground on the pedestrian crossing.

One witness told the TV station,

She was like, ‘Oh my God, the baby’s coming.’ And then I could see the baby’s head coming out.

Several people stopped to help until police and medics arrived. Women offered scarves to wrap the baby.

Her husband Cian McCourt, from Dublin, told the Mirror:

I came running up the street and I immediately knew it was my wife. I saw the crowd and I feared the worst, that she had been knocked down or something – it was really emotional. Then I saw the baby already in her arms.

An ambulance took the mother and baby to nearby Lenox Hill Hospital. A hospital spokeswoman says they went home yesterday.
