I saw this happen once and it was the most incredible sight I’ve ever witnessed. It shocked me a bit because I didn’t know this phenomenon had a name. It was like a rectangular ribbon of birds in the sky. The magic of nature.

Try to go in the area they are roosting in, I have seen shit about a foot deep in woods in Westmeath.

I saw one of these in Blenheim, NZ about 6 years ago. It was much further away and until I saw one of these murmuration videos last year, I still wouldn’t have had a feckin’ clue what I had just witnessed. “What the f**k is that?”. I was on my own and I couldn’t even tell they were birds from that distance. Just some weird looking cloud. I thought I was seeing things.

Saw a similar version of this this evening in ballingarry -Tipperary. The little feckers started to sh@te all over the place and we had to run for cover!!!! Worth seeing though

While it is really pretty to see it is a bad sign. Starling populations are dramatically increasing. They push out diversity and cause a lot of damage and noise. Rome has a huge problem with them and hasn’t found a solution.

Scientists have evidence that suggests this behaviour triggers genetic instruction or activation. Specifically, the density of the swarm will influence the average number of eggs laid in the forthcoming season. A very dense swarm means less food to share around amongst the population so offspring survival has a greater chance if the mother has very few eggs/offspring to feed. A less dense swarm means food may not be as scarce as other seasons as the population is fewer so a mother can afford to lay a number of eggs as there is a good chance she will be in a position to feed more than one. So birds behave in this way to gather information on population size. This information is the somehow processed to effect the number of eggs laid in the forthcoming season. Fascinating to see.
