7 strange but wonderful places you can watch movies in Dublin

Far from the sticky floor of your regular cinema.

1. The Drive-In Cinema, Dun Laoghaire

The outdoor cinema on Harbour Road in Dun Laoghaire specialises in cult classics – and it’s a seriously cool setting to sit and watch a movie.

Its next showing is The Exorcist on October 31st. No better time or place for it than outside on Halloween weekend.

2. Meeting House Square

Right bang in the middle of Temple Bar, in “Dublin’s Cultural Quarter”, sits Meeting House Square. A place for festivals, performances and the odd screening of a good movie.

Not a bad place for it at all:

3. Happenings Outdoor Screenings

Located in various parks around the city, Happenings has become a mainstay of summer cinema watching for so many people. Its season has pretty much wrapped up at this stage – given its need for half decent weather – but no doubt they will be back and bringing classic movies to the parks of the capital again next year. Their selection of both film and setting is always top notch.

4. The Pictures, Dublin Unitarian Church

This new event cinema will be showing the glorious The NeverEnding Story later this month in the Dublin Unitarian Church just off Stephen’s Green. The church has held plenty of gigs in the past – from Ham Sandwich to Hunting The Brave, above – so it’s well used to a cultured crowd.

5. Brook’s Hotel Private Cinema

This little cinema seats just 26 people, and its excellent bi-weekly schedule of movies coming up would make it worth the booking. Set within the hotel on Drury Street, this is certainly a more intimate setting than a normal cinema.

6. The Sugar Club

It’s just finished its Cult Classics Cinema Month – where the Leeson Street club showed the likes of Goodfellas and Fight Club to a packed audience. There’s pizza, gourmet popcorn and plenty of drink to keep you going throughout.

7. Irish Film Institute

The most traditional cinema here – but its offering every week is anything but. We’ve already established that it has the finest jacks known to man in the capital, but in terms of film and setting, you won’t go far wrong with the IFI.
