VIDEOS: Which of these songs should be Ireland’s Eurovision entry?

IT’S BEEN OVER nine months since the country was gripped by a fever that it hadn’t seen the likes of in years – as Jedward headed for Dusseldorf hoping to end a 15-year wait for Ireland’s eighth victory Eurovision Song Contest, in front of almost 1.2 million viewers.

Although Ireland is the most successful country in ESC history, it has indeed been 16 years now since Eimear Quinn’s ‘The Voice’ stole the show in Oslo – and with the now permanently-skewed telephone voting system, it’s harder than ever for an island nation on the edge of Europe to win it.

This year, in a slight change from the usual formula, RTÉ has unveiled the Eurosong entrants a few weeks in advance – the idea being that the voting public can consider the songs in advance, instead of hearing them for the first time on the night that voting takes place.

So, with the Eurosong-themed Late Late Show coming up this week, we thought it would be a good time to recap on the five entries – and ask for your thoughts on which one would get your vote for Ireland’s entry.

If you’re only looking for a quick taster of each tune, skip to the bottom – there’s a quick recap in the last video.

(All of the entries in full are available on the Ireland12pts YouTube channel.)

1. Celtic Whispers featuring Maria McCool – ‘Mistaken’

Mentored by Edele Barrett (née Lynch), formerly of B*Witched:

2. Donna McCaul – ‘Mercy’

Mentored by TV producer Bill Hughes – and yes, it is that Donna McCaul, of You’re A Star ‘Donna and Joe’ fame:

3. Andrew Mann – ‘Here I Am’

Mentored by Greg French of synth-pop band The Brilliant Things:

4. Una Gibney and David Shannon – ‘Language of Love’

Mentored by entertainment manager, producer and choreographer Julian Benson:

5. Jedward – ‘Waterline’

Mentored by Linda Martin of Eurovision 1992 fame, and looking for their second Eurovision attempt:

Recap

If you’re not looking for the full tune in each case, then South East Radio have come to your rescue: they’ve put together this selection with the chorus from each tune, helping you to pick at a glance.

The Irish entrant will be chosen by a combined jury and telephone vote on this Friday’s Late Late Show, and will perform in the first semi-final in Baku, Azerbaijan on Tuesday May 22. (The final itself is on May 26.)

Jedward!! Song 1 is lovely but Eurovision is no longer about the ‘Celtic’ voice. It’s all kitsch & showstoppingly odd now! It’s no longer just about the song, it’s a performance.
Like the guy, Mann, nice song, but dont think it will stand out.
The couple are like they & their song were taken from a previous eurovision. Very Eurovision. But very safe.
Jedward tick all the whacky boxes & the song isn’t bad. Sounds a bit ‘boys to men’ actually.

Donna McCaul’s song seems decent on first listen, Jedward’s song also catchy, but nowhere near as good as ‘Lipstick’ from last year. Could be a close run thing.

‘Nil points’ for the other three though!

I only listened to the short compilation version but I still feel the need to throw my PC in the washing machine.

All shite-ish but it’s between Mann an Jedward. If 1 goes through we’re definitely coming last

Donna’s song is pretty good, she’s well known on the ESC circuit – sang in the Maltese contest last year – and she sings well live. And couldn’t ask for a better mentor.

Jedward before last year were virtually unknown in eastern europe and now they are hugely popular in that part of the world, so the likely outcome is they will attract alot of votes. The song is decent enough, although not as strong as Lipstick, but I don’t think that matters. They have a big spin machine behind them and the fact that they are known in eastern block can only help as it is the kids (which they appeal to) are the ones doing the text/tele voting. Any of the other acts no matter how good they are do not have the same profile as Jedward so will not attract any votes!

Ah, sure isn’t it the taking part that counts not winning!!

Jedward got us the furthest we’ve been with Lipstick last year than we had come any other year so I’d go with them. Plus the fact that they are huge in Europe now so would attract a lot of votes.
Song is good but Lipstick was better. Still would put my money on Jedward though.

Sending the same act 2 years in a row to Eurovision is a bad idea. Greg French you were robbed. Well done on getting 2nd its absolutely fantastic but you and all the other acts were at a major disadvantage.
