IN AN ATTEMPT to encourage better rail safety, Australian authorities have released dramatic footage of a 12-year-old boy who survived being caught between a train and the station platform.
In the CCTV footage below, the boy is waiting on a platform in Sydney when he decides to cross over the tracks to the opposite platform. He then makes the return journey, but doesn’t quite clear the tracks before a train rushes through the station, pulling him along with it.
He apparently survived after tumbling into a cavity under the platform. The Telegraph reports that he suffered a broken arm and leg.
Australia and New Zealand’s joint National Rail Safety Week has published figures showing that at least 98 people illegally entered the track area last year. Some of the reasons offered for the trespassing include trying to catch the train or rushing to get to a parked car.
The data also shows that it can take trains travelling at 160 kph up to 900 metres to come to a full stop.
