VIDEO: Here's how an atomic clock operates

Short archive 1950s film explains the processes behind the clock’s accurate timekeeping.

GIZMODO HAS DISCOVERED an archive film which explains how the world’s first accurate atomic clock operates.

Produced by the UK’s National Physical Laboratory (NPL) in the 1950s, the video uses diagrams, simple animations and a narrator to explain how the Louis Essen-designed clock works. The NPL built the device in 1955.

(At 8-and-a-half minutes, it’s a bit longer than our other ‘Work Can Wait’ videos, but seeing as it’s an educational video, it kind of counts as ‘work’, right?)
