Video: Airbus unveils its plane 'cabin of the future'

Concept cabin, which allows passengers see through the walls, was designed to show that “the journey can be as much a voyage of discovery as the destination”.

AIRCRAFT MANUFACTURER Airbus has unveiled images of a new concept plane with an ‘intelligent’ cabin membrane which can become translucent, allowing passengers to see through the aircraft.

Planned for 2050, the plane’s cabin would be made from a bionic structure which mimics the efficiency of bird bone, according to the airline.

The membrane covering the cabin walls would regulate temperature and light.

FlightGlobal reports that Airbus executive vice-president of engineering Charles Champion explained that research of projected passenger expectations shaped the design:

Our research shows that passengers of 2050 will expect a seamless travel experience while also caring for the environment.

Champion said that the new cabin design shows that “the journey can be as much a voyage of discovery as the destination”.

The plane will also offer personalised zones instead of the traditional cabin space which could allow passengers participate in conferences, play virtual golf or communicate with their families back home. The airline says it’s research also focused on the environmental impact of the aircraft and this concept aircraft is “packed with technologies to reduce fuel burn, emissions, waste and noise.”
