What to watch on TV tonight: Friday

Here are the shows that’ll be on your Twitter timeline later.

EVERY WEEKDAY lunchtime, DailyEdge.ie rounds up the TV shows that you’ll be tweeting about tonight and talking about tomorrow.

Boomers (BBC One, 9pm)

A new BBC One sitcom is always a high-profile affair, and here’s an unusual one by the standards of recent years: it’s exclusively about three retired couples, living in Norfolk and finding out what it’s like to be out of the world of work for the first time in decades. The Inbetweeners it ain’t. Bound to generate some conversation though. #boomers

The Singer Takes It All (Channel 4, 9pm)

Hailed as “the very worst televised singing competition ever to be broadcast” by the Guardian, and “exceptionally low-rent” by the Telegraph, this show is already building something of a cult following by its third episode. Are they hate-watching, you ask? Does it matter? #thesingertakesitall

Dog Day Afternoon (UTV, 11.10pm)

And in case your appetite for trash has been sated, here’s something really wonderful: a very young Al Pacino and a very unwell-looking John Cazale in career-defining roles as hapless bank robbers whose heist goes horribly, painfully wrong. If you don’t watch this, set the box.

Everybody’s talking about: The Knick

Cinemax / YouTube

Bono’s daughter Eve Hewson stars alongside Clive Owen in this big-budget period drama set in a New York hospital (Knickerbocker Hospital, hence the name) in the early twentieth century. Directed by Steven Soderbergh and featuring lavish recreations of turn-of-the-century New York, the show brings its second episode to US screens tonight.

By the way, its premiere set a new fastest time record for on-screen nudity.

Or flick over for…

  • The Great British Bake Off: An Extra Slice (BBC2, 9pm) Spin-off show about cake. Cake cake cake.
  • Twilight (E4, 9pm) The original movie that spawned a monster.
  • The Omen (Film4, 11.25pm) The actually good movie that spawned a monster.
  • Callan’s Kicks (RTÉ One, 9.35pm) Oliver Callan, doing what he does in the final episode of the series.
