VIDEO: Your weekend movies... Pacific Rim and educating monsters

Cinema trip this weekend? TheJournal.ie brings you snippets from new releases to help you decide where to put your money…

WHICH NEW MOVIE release is worth the price of a cinema ticket this weekend?

We’re here to help you decide just that, with these trailers.

Pacific Rim

(WarnerBrosPictures/YouTube)

For fans of: Monsters, battles, destruction

Avoid if: You snigger at silly jokes, you hate monsters

I’ll just give you a moment to get all sniggering out of the way before I start.

Ready? This looks at what happens when humans create a super machine to battle ferocious monsters that emerged from deep within the Pacific. From director Guillermo Del Toro, it is a super-charged, high voltage film swathed in day-glo neon lights. Intense.

  • RottenTomatoes.com critics rating: 81 per cent. Audience rating: 98 per cent want to see

The Deep

(Elena G/YouTube)

For fans of: Darkness, misery, mystery

Avoid if: You can’t swim

Based on a true story, this Icelandic film brings us the tale of what happened when a trawler leaving port in heavy seas in 1984 capsizes in a freak accident. One man survives, after spending an unprecedented six hours in the water. But he becomes uncomfortable with the resulting fame.

  • RottenTomatoes.com critics rating: None. Audience rating: None

Monsters University

(joblomovienetwork/YouTube)

For fans of: Monsters, lols

Avoid if: You’re more into black and white arthouse

The Monsters are back, and this time they’re (you guessed it) heading to university. This animated film fills us in on how Mike and Sulley first met, and how they initially weren’t exactly the best of friends. Aww. With the voices of Billy Crystal, John Goodman and Steven Buscemi to name a few, this looks sweet and funny.
