We listened to the top 10 songs in Ireland... and gave our honest opinions

What is Ireland listening to? We found out.

THE CHARTS MIGHT not be as relevant as they once were, but they do provide insights into what people are listening to.

And if you’re out of the music loop, reading through the charts might cause you to say, “What?” and “Who’s that?”

So, what songs are people addicted to at the moment? Are they any good?

We listened to the top 10 songs in Ireland, week ending June 5th, and shared our thoughts.

1. OMI – Cheerleader

Ultra Music / YouTube

It’s number one in the country at the moment and with good reason — it’s crazy catchy and easy to listen to. It has all the necessary components of a summer jam — addictive hook, bit of trumpet, Jamaican vibe.

In short, it’s the kind of song that both your 56-year-old Ma and 3-year-old niece would enjoy. Expect it to hang around for the rest of the summer…

2. Major Lazer & DJ Snake  - Lean On (feat. MØ)

majorlazer / YouTube

What can we say? It’s a relaxed banger — not too intense, perfect for summer.

The sort of song you can imagine Leaving Cert students describing as “our song!!!!” as they head off on their weeklong trip to Magaluf.

3. Wiz Khalifa – See You Again (feat. Charlie Puth)

Wiz Khalifa / YouTube

Let’s be real — this is basically a Sam Smith song with an astoundingly schmaltzy rap (sample lyric: “I know we loved to hit the road and laugh…”) thrown on top of it.

The song was written in honour of the late Paul Walker and we can understand how it might elicit salty tears in the context of Furious 7, but aside from that…

Still, you have to give credit for Wiz Khalifa for continuing to stay relevant  ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

4. Jason Derulo – Want To Want Me

Jason Derulo / YouTube

What happens when Jason Derulo sits down and thinks, “Hmm, how can I channel the spirit of Olly Murs while simultaneously trying to emulate the hook of I Wanna Dance With Somebody without getting sued?”

This.

5. Lunchmoney Lewis – Bills

LunchMoneyLewisVEVO / YouTube

Okay, this is… terrible.

It sounds like it was written for children, but yet it’s about bills and, as everyone knows, children don’t pay bills. Who is this for? Why is it so popular? And why is it so high-pitched?

Christ.

6. David Guetta – Hey Mama (feat. Nicki Minaj, Bebe Rexha and Afrojack)

David Guetta / YouTube

True story: David Guetta walked into a recording studio, pressed the “automatic” button and went to sleep. When he woke up 40 minutes later, Hey Mama was ready!

This song is frantic and stressful. In fact, it’s basically the aural equivalent of a foam party. At least it has Nicki, though, and that’s always a good thing.

7. Galantis – Runaway (U & I)

Proximity / YouTube

Two words: helium vocals.

The thought of trying to dance to this in a club makes us want to move into a nursing home, because clearly we are ancient. How do you even dance to this? Fist pump the air? Just sort of bang into people at random intervals?

It’d almost make you yearn for the days of Maniac 2000…

8. Kygo – Firestone (feat. Conrad)

MorningCoffeeMusic / YouTube

Well, well, well, what do we have here?

A generic dance number about how our hearts are like firestones, of course. (Don’t ask us what a firestone is, but just know that your heart is like one.)

We’re beginning to get concerned about what Ireland is listening to.

9. Mark Ronson – Uptown Funk

MarkRonsonVEVO / YouTube

In serious danger of wearing out its welcome, but then it comes on the radio and you can’t help but be like…

10. Carly Rae Jepsen - I Really Like You

CarlyRaeJepsenVEVO / YouTube

Bubblegum pop at its finest and it has Tom Hanks in the video.

Carly Rae Jepsen to the rescue yet again.
