9 Instagram trends that need to disappear

Two words: gym selfies.

THIS WEEK, INSTAGRAM celebrated its fourth birthday. Whether you love it or merely think of it as a vehicle for smugness, there is no questioning its popularity with the app surpassing 200m+ active users in March.

But, like every phenomenon, it has its flaws. Here are nine Instagram trends that need to end immediately.

1. Morning selfies

IF YOU’RE ASLEEP, HOW DID YOU MANAGE TO TAKE A SELFIE? Even worse if it’s captioned “I woke up like dis”.

2. Sharing smug photos of healthy food

Oh, is the quinoa and pomegranate seed salad you had for lunch #yum?

3. Posting unappetising photos of food

Worse than posting photos of healthy food is posting photos of food that looks like a dog’s dinner. If you are going to post a photo of your food, at least make it look semi-appetising and not like slop.

4. ‘Outfit of the Day’ posts

Unless you are getting married or are Beyoncé, then there’s really no need to be doing this.

5. Sharing inspirational quotes

“So glad I logged on to Instagram to be reminded to work hard and dream big,” said no-one, ever.

6. Extreme hashtagging

Take a picture of a sunset? No need for this lark: #sunset #summer #photography #light #hashtag #holiday #sunshine #summertime #loveit #heaven #bliss #paradise #smug

7. Collages

Posting a collage of twelve thumbnails of beautifully lit fruit bowls and sunsets? Firstly, this isn’t art class and secondly, that requires zooming and we ain’t zooming.

8. Overdoing #ThrowbackThursday

There’s nothing wrong with Throwback Thursday itself, but there is when you overdo it and you spam your followers’ feeds with an endless stream of photos of yourself as a child. (And don’t get us started on those who post photos from, like, 2011 and think that constitutes a throwback.)

9. And finally, gym selfies.

Announcing that you’ve run 10km to your Facebook friends is bad enough. Posting photographic evidence of your workout? The greatest sin of all.
