Hackers threaten attacks on US cinemas showing James Franco's new film

The New York premiere of The Interview has been cancelled as a result.

THE NEW YORK PREMIERE of James Franco and Seth Rogen’s new comedy The Interview has been cancelled after threatened attacks on all cinemas showing the film.

The hacker group ‘The Guardians of the Peace’, which has claimed responsibility for the Sony hacks, has threatened to attack all US cinemas showing the North Korean film.

North Korea has previously denied involvement in the hacks.

As a result of the threat, which referenced the 9/11 attacks, the New York premiere of the film has been cancelled.

Variety reports that last night, a new message from the group appeared on file-sharing sites, which read:

Warning: We will clearly show it to you at the very time and places The Interview be shown including the premiere, how bitter fate those who seek fun in terror should be doomed to. Soon all the world will see what an awful movie Sony Pictures Entertainment has made.
The world will be full of fear. Remember the 11th of September 2001. We recommend you to keep yourself distant from the places at that time. (If your house is nearby, you’d better leave.) Whatever comes in the coming days is called by the greed of Sony Pictures Entertainment. All the world will denounce the SONY.

Deadline reports that cinema chains around the US have pulled the film, and all publicity appearances by its stars have been cancelled.

Earlier this year North Korea called The Interview, which centres on an assassination attempt on Kim Jong-Un, “an act of war” and threatened the US with a “resolute and merciless response” unless the film was banned.
