The Hunger Games has taken in almost $70 million on its first day in the US (around €50 million), setting a new box office record for a film that isn’t a sequel.
The film, which opened simultaneously across Europe and America on Friday, had the fifth-best opening day ever behind Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 and the three Twilight sequels.
The Hollywood Reporter has predicted that it could take over $130 million in its opening weekend and could end up breaking into the top grossing films of all time.
The current record for best opening day is held by Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 which made $91 million on its first day last year.
The much-hyped film is set in a dystopian future where twenty-four young people from different areas across what was North America are forced to fight to the death until just one person survives.
Entertainment Weekly notes that it has already made more money on its first day than films such as The Dark Knight, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 all made on their first day.
