I’m a licker and proud of it!

1. I lick the lid until it’s clean.
2. I always use a small spoon so that I can maximize scraping yogurt out at the end.
3. I used to rim the yogurt pot at the end but sure can’t get away with that when you’re in a stable relationship

Thrilled to see so many lick their lids. I’d have thought in these days of the throwaway society that very few would still do it. I love the yogurt on the lid. It’s extra thick and creamy.

I remember as a child if we had a yummy desert my sisters and my brother would point to something behind our parents to make them turn around and we’d lick our plates. They knew we were doing it but were happy to turn a blind eye. Happy memories…

I am very disturbed by the level of non licking of yogurt lids going on in this country . Thank you for the fine journalism and for uncovering this tragic state of affairs with your poll. Very worrying waste of lovely yogurt. What to do next ? How can we go on.

Is “Do you lick the yoghurt foil lid or not?” a euphemism for something else?

I scrape the foil first with the spoon, and if I miss a bit, then I lick it!

I’ve taught my son to lick the lid too…..how can you just dump it in the bin??

Yes. There’s a risk you’ll cut your tongue on the foil but that’s always been a risk I’ve been willing to take. That said, foil lids aren’t as common as they used to be; papery ones are much more common now which takes that element of risk out of the equation.

Has anyone actually cut their tongue, or is this an obscure Irish mammy tactic with no real reason other than to strike the fear of god in ye? I’ve always done it – since the days of stiff foil right up to this modern metallised paper. Never cut myself.

Lid licker for life, also suck the jam off the knife, and lift cereal bowl to mouth to get the end of the milk which the missus HATES!

I realised after sending in this question that here in Finland we’re a little behind the rest of the world when it comes to packaging. All yoghurts have foil lids. Ireland now has fancy paper like ones and so on. All the better for licking. No risk of cut tongues!

ok to be honest shouldnt the non yougurt eaters stay away from this question! i cant comprehend someone wasting yogurty goodness by throwing away the unlicked foil…i say to you people ‘you aint proper yogurt eaters!!!! waste not want not!

The slightly curdled yogurt on the lid is so much more flavoursome. Off to have some now…

Was this only Monday’s article!? How weird, I just found myself licking the lid of a yoghurt and I was just going to suggest it as a ‘burning question’ before I googled it :)

I did until once I licked it before looking at it, and then saw my tongue streak through a patch of mould on the lid. Then I gagged.

I couldn’t lick the lid in a fit! Always has that creepy thick bit like around the top of the carton! Eugh… Throw the lid away and scrape around the top of the carton then eat the yoghurt!

Can i lick it? yes i can, you know what i can do with a yoghurt lid in my hand, ha ha ha ha remember that, 1 a 1,,2 yo that yoghurt’s fat.

I’m sorry but can I mention the very obvious issue with lid-licking that has not been mentioned so far? The vile, disgusting, stomach-churning noise that men in particular make when they’re licking the lid! It’s so rotten that sometimes when my husband does it I can’t even finish my yoghurt. So that’s a bigger waste.
