The burning question*: Do you brush your teeth before or after breakfast?

WE KNOW HOW you feel. The week looms ahead and you have a lot on your plate.

So do like we do here in TheJournal.ie HQ and get stuck into a serious debate on one of life’s most pressing questions…

This week: Morning mouth, anyone? We all (presumably) like to leave the house with a sparkly smile and fresh breath in the morning – but when do YOU prefer to brush your teeth…

A. As soon as you get up (before breakfast), or

B. After breakfast

What’s it going to be?

Apparently, in some leaflet I read in a dentist’s waiting room (never let it be said I don’t cite my sources!) you’re better off brushing before breakfast. Bacteria build up overnight, you see, and if they’re still there when you eat, they “feed” on your breakfast, which causes them to secrete the acid that eats into your tooth enamel. If you brush first, that’s most of them gone and so less acid gets produced. But your orange juice tastes manky…

After breakfast or instead of it (tend to skip breakfast a few days a week.. too time consuming)

I had it on pretty good authority that after is the best way to go. The point of brushing your teeth at all is to remove food stuffs that, if left unattended, can rot away at your teeth.

No point brushing them and then filling yourself up with food.

I actually brush before my breakfast! I read a piece in a paper years ago from a dentist who said plaque is caused by bacteria in your mouth reacting with the food you eat. If you remove that bacteria before you eat, you’re doing less damage to your teeth. He recommended brushing before you eat and I’ve done that ever since.

Before you ask, no I didn’t verify that elsewhere! I’m an advertisers dream so I am!

So I brush before breakfast and then going to bed. If I’m going out in the evening or have had garlic or something for lunch I’ll brush in the middle of the day too.

RE: the minty taste eating your breakfast. I work from home, so don’t usually eat breakfast until about an hour or so after I get up, so the minty taste is mainly gone.

I always brush after breakfast. Can’t understand why anyone would eat after brushing.

As for the dentist, I would be inclined to disregard advice from someone with a vested interest. Question everything (‘cept me)!

Alarmed at everyone brushing after breakfast. I always thought people brushed before…. weird. Apparently you shouldn’t even drink water before brushing in the morning. You end up ingesting all the rank bacteria that builds up overnight and it’s bad for your teeth too.

Actually it depends. if your having acidic items for breakfast like coffee or oj, you should either brush before or else an hour after. the acid temporarily weakens your enamel so the worst thing to do is brush right away. if its cereal then should be fine to brush immediately.

Before in my case. I start work at 7:30 and breaky is at 9:30. Don’t want to offend people with manky morning breath- not very nice.
