The 12 burning questions* of Xmas: Christmas lunch or dinner?

THE FESTIVE SEASON. A time of joy and goodwill to all… Oh, who are we kidding?

Christmas, New Year and the fallow period in between are ripe for misunderstandings, family tension and silly arguments. We’re here to gauge the temperature on the niggly rows of the season and set them all to rights.

Today: Oh yes. The Big Dinner. Our Spanish colleague Miguel (hi Miguel!) tells us that he had his Christmas dinner last night, as per his country’s tradition. AND he has seafood. The only division for us today is whether the Christmas Day dinner should be served around lunchtime/early afternoon (hi Gavan!)  or in the evening (hi Aoife!):

A. Lunchtime(ish), or…

B. Evening

So… what’s the right time for Christmas dinner?

We usually have our dinner at around 3. Plenty of time then to pass out on the sofa in a turkey coma in front of the telly afterwards!

Doesn’t matter what time as long as you have as many family members as you can sitting down together. Now the real burning question ( and I mean burning ) sprouts or no sprouts ????
Happy Christmas Journal and All !

We were supposed to have dinner at three but our oven is on the blink and the gas ran out today. The food will be on the table in 30 minutes – a Christmas miracle!!

Sitting down to have ours in the next few minutes. I think people are mad to have it when it’s bright outside but I suppose it’s just what you’re used to when growing up! Happy Christmas everyone! :)

I was supposed to be eating mine at two o clock pm that is however it dident arrive untill three thirty by which time i was agitated to say the least .The turkey seemed over cooked and the potatoes had too much garlic for my taste ,The trifle deviated from tradition by omitting the jelly,i found this difficult to get my aging hesd around ,when i was a girl trifle always had jelly in.Now the atmosphere in my bedroom is heavily poluted by some very pungent flatulence.Mine.The dog has stuck close to me all evening hes very sensitive to odours and seems concerned by my state of maloudourance,Must try and sleep now not to be slipping down stairs for a late nite coffee and a spiced beef sandwich.

It’s called Christmas dinner. Dinner is traditionally eaten in the middle of the day. Anything in the evening is called tea or supper. It is incorrect to call an evening meal “dinner”.
