Ten beach villas we wish we could afford

It’s sunny out, and the national obsession with property is all over the news. These getaways start at €4.2m.

WITH THE PUBLICATION of the Nyberg report, the topic of property is back at the top of the national agenda.

Last week, NAMA chairman Frank Daly said his agency could begin lending in a bid to kickstart the property market too. Then there was last week’s ‘fire sale’ of distressed properties at the Shelbourne.

But hey, the weather’s getting better so maybe it’s time to give ourselves a break and fantasise about the kind of beach villas we’d escape to were we lucky enough to be able to afford it.

None of the following are in Ireland. We wouldn’t want to be accused of triggering another firesale at some point in future…

Ten beach villas we wish we could afford
1 / 23
  • 01 - Six Senses Soneva Kiri, Koh Raet, Thailand - €26.6m

There's a few good reasons why this spot comes with such a hefty price tag - it's got its own private island.

Transport to the island is an hour's flight from Bangkok, in a jet provided by the management company which serves the island from another one nearby.

"Four stories of brilliantly orchestrated living space flow melodiously from an ethereal iron-railed, grand carved marble serpentine staircase, to the splendorous entertaining great room which is adorned by renaissance furnishings," waffles the blurb. "Beyond lies one of two gourmet kitchens that are an epicurean's delight." We're hungry now, so time for just one more...

"The bedrooms all have sea views and the layout is organised in such a way that the master bedroom is away from all the guest bedrooms, offering privacy for the owners of the villa."

The seafront property also boasts "truly amazing views both day and night, the night view with the lights of the boats entering Patong bay, and the far off lights of Patong twinkling in the distance, is stunning, and a lot more interesting than a lot of night time sea views." At that price, wouldn't they want to be?!

  • 08 - Jomchang, Phuket, Thailand - €5.6m

Those with a greater-than-usual interest in local ecology will appreciate the "almost infinite variety in its topography and vegetation", though the average traveller is more likely to be keen on the "sandy coves, dramatic cliffs, tropical forest, picturesque hills and crystal waters".

The last of the Thai ones, we promise. This five-bedroom house in a 'traditional' architectural style is "ideal for families looking for the ultimate in luxury and privacy."
  • 09 - Andara, Phuket, Thailand - €5.3m

With an internal floor space of 540 square metres, it's big enough for enough family privacy - though the younger folk will probably be happily occupied in the 18m private pool.
