IF YOU’VE BEEN paying attention to American media over the past few days, you may have read something about the return of Starbucks’ Pumpkin Spice Latte.
Just a few things, not at all hyperbolic. At ALL.
You probably thought, “All this, for a coffee?” But the Pumpkin Spice Latte (or PSL, as it is fondly known) is a HUGE deal in the US – perhaps the equivalent of Creme Eggs at Easter over here.
So what does it even taste like?
The limited edition drink is a combination of espresso, pumpkin-flavoured syrup and milk; it’s topped whipped cream and spices like cinnamon, nutmeg and clove.
It appears on the menu only during the autumn months – this year, it hit stores on 2 September, but dedicated PSL lovers took part in a ‘scavenger hunt’ to get the drink early.
Why do people care so much?
For many Americans, the Pumpkin Spice Latte is THE symbol of autumn.
The PSL has come to be associated with teenage girls, who seem to get the most excited about its arrival each year. Recently, Time called Taylor Swift the ‘musical equivalent’ to the Pumpkin Spice Latte – so you kind of see what we mean.
Starbucks have even set up an ‘official’ Twitter account for the beverage, which has over 90,000 followers. For real.

Yes, you can – it was launched in the UK and Ireland in 2012. Pumpkin in general isn’t as popular over here as it is in the US, but people here are already starting to revere the PSL.
