Snoopy-shaped island forms after volcanic eruption

We want to go to there.

A VOLCANIC ERUPTION in Japan has caused an island to form in what is undoubtedly the exact shape of beloved Peanuts cartoon canine, Snoopy. Island formed just like Charlie Brown’s dog.

The uncanny landmass rose after a series of eruptions occurred 1,000 kilometres south of Toyko in the seismically active Pacific Ring of Fire. The new islet Niijima (the head) attached to existing island Nishinoshima to form the replica of Charlie Brown’s dog.

Now it really looks like it… doesn’t it? The pup even has a collar, caused by a stretch of red sea presumed to be coloured by molten magma.

When the mass first rose in November, volcanologists thought that it might erode. However, further eruptions caused it to grow, and NASA observations first speculated the fusion of the two islands last week.

Well now it’s a reality, and Twitter users have already nick-named the formation ‘Snoopy Island’.

But alas, don’t even think about visiting it. The Japanese coast guard has warned against attempts to visit the island as it is essentially the remnants of a volcano and is still dangerous and active. This also means that it could change shape, distorting poor Snoopy beyond all recognition.

Snoopy Island, we hardly knew ya. We may add this, along with the willy-shaped church and Trinity’s sex toy sculpture, to the definitive list of ‘things shaped like other things’ in 2013.

It’s already won the Global Post’s prestigious End of the Year Award for Best Island of 2013, so the accolades just keep rolling in.

In fairness, it’s a bit more convincing than the Snoopy Island in Fujairah, UAE…
