RUPERT MURDOCH’S WIFE Wendi Deng has become an internet sensation in China after her quickfire defence of her husband.
When Mr Murdoch was smeared with a shaving foam pie by an activist yesterday, Ms Deng leapt into action – swinging a slap at the attacker and trying to retaliate with the shaving foam. And her actions made headlines on Chinese news sites which hailed her as an ideal “tiger woman” and “Charlie’s Angel”, the Guardian reports.
Former volleyball player Wendi, 42, reacted more quickly than security guards or police, who eventually led the man away. “Her reactions were super-fast! She walks away as the only hero,” wrote blogger Zhang Xin. According to Asian Age, Ms Deng was soon nicknamed “Smackdown Sister” by web users.
Ms Deng’s actions were seen as good publicity for Chinese women everywhere. One blogger wrote: “This adds value to the image of Chinese wives. They have previously proved their ability to cook and run a business. Now they can add bodyguard.” Another added: “The image of Chinese women just got a lift.”
A third added: “When you marry, you should marry a Chinese woman. In times of danger, she will act.” Ms Deng was born in Guangzhou, China and worked for the country’s Star TV – owned by Murdoch’s News Corporation – before marrying the 80-year-old media mogul in 1999.
