6 things Lord Henry Mountcharles told us about the Slane Castle distillery

Whiskey lovers assemble.

IN EXCITING WHISKEY-RELATED news this week, we found out that there is to be a distillery built on the site of Slane Castle. Woo.

So, DailyEdge.ie spoke to Lord Henry Mountcharles – the owner of Slane Castle – about the new distillery. And we learnt some interesting things:

1. The whole thing is set to open to the public in 2017

The whole operation will be up and running from 2016 onwards, with the tours to be open from 2017.

2. In fact, there’s going to be a visitor centre to go along with the distillery

By 2017, with the distillery open, there will be a visitor centre and guided tours – like other famous breweries and distilleries around the country – as Lord Henry outlined:

It will be a working distillery that people can visit in a fantastic setting. We anticipate that it will be a substantial boost to tourism in the area.

3. Slane Castle Irish Whiskey has actually been around since 2009 – and was first sold at the Oasis gig at the castle

4. The distillery will be based in some stables near the castle, designed by an architect called Capability Brown in the 18th Century

Fancy name.

5. The company that bought Slane Castle Irish Whiskey already makes Jack Daniels

Brown-Forman are the US whiskey company behind JD, Southern Comfort and Woodford Reserve – for all you whiskey connoisseurs. Lord Henry sees them as ideal partners:

We really like that they understand whiskey.

6. The history of Slane will be at the core of the tours and drink

As Lord Henry outlines, everything you associate with Slane will be a part of both the whiskey and the guided tour:

We’ve been in Slane as a family since the 1700’s so there is a lot of history that goes along with that – as well as the concerts have been running – so that gives us an exceptional combination.

So now, whiskey lovers prepare yourselves. Something pretty exciting is just on the horizon.
