'Serial' victim's brother says podcast sensationalises his sister's murder

The podcast centers on Hae Min Lee, who was murdered in Baltimore in 1999.

THE BROTHER OF Hae Min Lee, subject of the massively popular Serial podcast, has said the show is sensationalising his sister’s murder.

Baltimore teenager Hae Min Lee was murdered in 1999 – her ex-boyfriend, Adnan Sayed, was later found guilty of her murder and jailed. To this day, he claims he did not kill Hae.

Fifteen years after the murder, journalist Sara Koenig (of NPR’s hugely popular This American Life) began looking at the case again to determine if Adnan actually killed Hae.

The resulting podcast has gripped listeners around the world, with a new episode set to go online tomorrow morning.

Now a man claiming to be Hae’s younger brother has spoken out about the podcast in a post on Reddit, saying that while it may be a addictive yarn for the listeners, for him and his family it is “real life”:

To you listeners, it’s another murder mystery, crime drama, another episode of CSI. You weren’t there to see your mom crying every night, having a heart attack when she got the news that the body was found, and going to court almost every day for a year seeing your mom weeping, crying and fainting.
You don’t know what we went through. Especially to those who are demanding a family response and having a meet up… you guys are disgusting. Shame on you. I pray that you don’t have to go through what we went through and have your story blasted to five million listeners.

Hae’s brother went on to praise Koenig’s work, calling her an “awesome” investigator, but said he had ignored her when she attempted to contact him for the podcast.

He posted a screenshot of her message as proof of his identity, which was later taken down as it contained Koenig’s personal contact details.

Copies of the message are floating around on Twitter:
