Ruby from GBBO came out on Twitter, and inspired loads of other people to come out too

Ruby appeared in the memorable 2013 series.

YOU MIGHT REMEMBER Ruby Tandoh from the 2013 series of the Great British Bake Off.

Yesterday, she came out publicly on Twitter, and inspired an avalanche of tweets of support, of love and of other people coming out.

Ruby who?

Ruby was one of the favourites to win from the start, but was also the subject of much criticism; she was accused of being too thin, too emotional, too flirty with judge Paul Hollywood, too attractive.

In fact, she wrote about the vitriol herself in The Guardian:

I’d rather eat my own foot than attempt to seduce my way to victory, and even if I had any intention playing that card, it’s insulting to both the judges to suggest that they’d ever let their professional integrity be undermined in that way.

Ruby didn’t win GBBO in the end, but she did get down to the final three.

Since appearing on the show she’s written a baking book, continued her studies, become something of a Twitter star, and is a regular columnist for The Guardian.

Yesterday afternoon, she tweeted this:

Her revelation has led to an outpouring of support and love,

She’s also revealed that the response to her tweet led to others coming out to friends, loved ones and online pals too:

GBBO judge Paul Hollywood saw her news too, and while he congratulated her, he wasn’t happy with the way she chose to mention him:

He clarified that it was the wording of the message that bothered him:
