A sales man came to our house in the early 80′s and sold us encyclopedias called Childcraft. anyone else have them? I still have the whole pack.

Love that ‘Focus on the Past’ is a book for kids when you spend most of your adult life being told not to do this :-D

Liam Breatnach, author of Buail & Gluais Liom, was my teacher in 6th Class. A fantastic teacher, and a Gentleman. St. Patrick’s boys NS, Gardeners Hill, Cork. Great memories.

Primary school in the sixties. Buntus cainte , an bosca bruscar , mac ui guggai , tablebooks Spelling tests , warm milk in glass bottles and brown bread jam sandwiches for lunch wrapped in bread paper. Corpus Christi processions. Daily angelus. Prayers before and after everything. An Bata .. The stick used to whack us with if you got something wrong. School photos in little red viewing boxes. Navy nylon knickers. The cold. The nuns selling ‘ the messenger ‘. The black babies. Skipping ropes. Elastic band games. Squares. Ink wells. Blotting paper. A school case. Fat crayons. Texaco art competition. New maths. Exploring English.

That was a real treat reminiscing with those images. Busy at maths. Brought me right back. Great memories. And I’m crap at math.

Sounding… My dad had one and had notes in the side some near 25yrs later I used the book and my teacher gave me rhetorically exact same notes. Made my life so much easier…

Anyone remember topsy & tim? They were my readers. I still have the veritas hymnal from choir practice in primary school. I remember exploring English.

I did my leaving cert just after they decided that it was no longer compulsary to study peig. Our irish teacher decided that after years of listening to ” the demented ravings of a mad kerry woman” she had enough and was never doing it with her class again. Instead we did toraiocht diarmad agus grainne.

Teacher use to comment on my mothers lovely wallpaper covering the books.

Even at 32, I’m filled with dread at the sight gluais liom and Busy at Maths.

I remember never seeing the front cover of my books as my mam would cover them in 1980s woodchip wallpaper.

That great feeling you get when you walk into class and see the TV and VCR set up at the front. Another Éamon de Buitléar nature doco!!

Went to an all Irish primary school so busy at maths = gafa le mata. To this day I still multiply in Irish in my head. ‘Sè faoi ceathar, fiche ceathar’

Ah I loved the woodlander stories and I remember fondly the excitement the whole class had in the run up to getting the christmas annuals. Do kids still get these things?

The worst part of this is that it highlights the amount of changes made to books in schools when there was little or nothing wrong with the ones they had out. It’s all a money-making scheme. Take for example the history book schools use nowadays. History hasn’t changed, but the book has, and it costs €35. It’s no wonder schools are looking at bringing in iPads and tablets to replace the expenses of the paper textbook.

Ahhh school…….when everything was simple and the biggest crisis in your life was having to eat your lunch in the classroom because ‘the yard’ was off limits due to rain!

Does anyone remember the big furry green monster fella that spoke Irish in videos?! Can’t remember his name for the life of me, but he was class. And every question he asked could be answered either “Sea!” or “Nil!”

Busy at maths brings back the memories , I can smell my school back and the sandwiches in the bottom of it.

We used to get these big maaaaassice colour-coded pictures to colour once wvery year. Used to colour half the thing in the 1st week and then i’d get sick of it. And I used to get the saaaame one every year. The excitement when I got the mother to buy me a brand new packet of markers with every colour under the sun just so i could colour the damned thing perfectly

Anyone remember the videos with the “magic pencil”? It used to write out letters then words but the end of the pencil where u can normally see the lead used to glow like a beacon! It was this odd floating pencil. Think the school got a job lot of those videos. Even so ended up watching the same episode about four times before the teacher realised how bored we were!

Ah, the annuals, my daughter looks for a fiver every Xmas to get them, then spends the next two days reading them and doing the puzzles. Also, the school milk, I remember my mam making me get it even though I hated milk cos it was subsidized, used to end up in the bin, usually 2 weeks later when it was about to walk out of my bag, memories :)

Most of these are very recent. I use a lot of them now in class. Obv not the really retro ones. Could have gone back farther. Remember lusai luch agus pol peist? Anyone?

There was a maths book called Figure It Out which I absolutely hated. It caused massive rows with my dad over homework when he couldn’t manage to explain it to me. I cried a lot over that stupid book!

Ah memories!

I can only remember two books from my Primary School days in the 1940s, the Cathecism and Aistí Beaga. Aistí Beaga caused many a barbaric thrashing just after the lunch (dinner) break. Passages had to be memorised and we walked back to school trembling from fear in case we were pounced on to recite and explain the content. The one outstanding memory offered by the Aistí is the sight of one of my classmates being punched by a six foot, 18 stone teacher and landing up in the fire grate amid a shower of sparks from the turf fire. Secondary school produced a great variety of books which were expertly covered for me each year by a grandaunt who had learnt her trade as a bookbinder in Dublin in the 1890s………thanks for that Agnes!

There’s a reason why people like this kinda thing, memories of happier times, warm, fuzzy, familiar, and comfortable. Now everything’s junk. Today we got Facebook, X Factor, who said what on Twitter, celebrity obsessed culture, EU and its road to nothingness, on and on all the day. Its a signal to the end of days when 20 new jobs in a takeaway are announced.

I remember busy at maths! I rember the shite teachers that didnt teach it properly and made u believe u were useless at math! It took till secondary school and only one amazing teacher to turn that around! Gooood flying riddance to all those bad teachers and their fabulous pensions! If i remember correctly one particular teacher used to say ‘ it doesnt matter to me if ye dont listen i still get paid’ wow she was truely inspiring! : )

As a kid I actually preferred Busy At Maths to Mathsmagic as it was more difficult! Weird child, I was. Maths is fun though :D

And remember Inis Dom books? Fair difficult, they were.

Any of the uncovered books in our Irish class had crossed out the “e” in Peig – the more I read the book, the more I hated her..and before books and wallpaper and pictures to colour in there was the day ritual of “taking a line for a walk”!..when I think of it!!
