So much sugar, it’s almost obscene. The cronut was the hot pastry trend of 2013, but should it be a member of the pastry big leagues? We say no.

Never sure how to feel about those apple chunks, to be honest.
9. Custard slices
As one DailyEdge.ie staffer said: “Custard is bad enough without it being refrigerated into a gelatinous lump.”

Weirdly, nicer than custard slices, and palatable even to those who don’t like coffee.
7. Apple/jam Danish
When quizzed about Danish pastries, many in TheJournal.ie/DailyEdge.ie Towers said they were “nice” but land firmly in the middle of the road. Poor Danish pastries.
6. Eclairs
Once, an eclair was a treat. Now, it seems like a challenge. Also, the way the chocolate on top sweats in the bakery fridges makes us uneasy.
5. Almond croissants
Adding a touch of sweetness to the beloved croissant. You’re doing the Lord’s work, almonds.
4. Profiteroles
Unlike their taller cousin, the eclair, profiteroles are a lot easier to handle. The dessert of champions.
3. Chocolate croissants/pain au chocolat
All the lovely flakiness of a croissant, but with CHOCOLATE! It has to be a winner. Occasionally, you can be let down by a sub par chocolate filling. But only occasionally.
2. Cinnamon buns/rolls/swirls
Whatever you call them, there’s no denying that cinnamon buns are pastry royalty. If you don’t believe us, go to Simon’s Place in Dublin and sort yourself out.
