Pop divas and funny faces: A beginner's guide

Beyoncé isn’t the only one prone to making a few funny expressions on stage

BEYONCÉ WENT DOWN a treat at the Super Bowl this weekend between the array of back-up dancers and being joined on stage by Kelly and Michelle of Destiny’s Child.

Despite the praise, it seems Team Beyoncé aren’t happy with some of the snaps that were taken of the star on the night. Buzzfeed got a letter from her publicist asking that certain snaps of the star were taken down. Stuff in the vein of this apparently:

This kind of picture is really just a look at Beyoncé lost in the moment and giving it her all on stage etc etc. And a quick trawl through the archives shows that looking a bit silly on stage is par for the course for your average pop diva. Don’t believe us? Check out this lot.

Rihanna

She may have major style appeal and a rake of huge hits but Rihanna doesn’t always keep her cool in a live setting.

Sometimes she just has to have a little laugh

And sometimes Rihanna wants to bark orders at someone in the audience. We’re guessing.

And because Rihanna is a 100% bad-ass popstar she’s not afraid to do a little Blue Steel on stage either:

Ke$ha

A relative newcomer compared to Beyoncé et al, Ke$ha has still got an impressive array of dodgy faces already.

There’s this faintly spooky expression:

Also, this is Ke$ha’s take on Rihanna’s “bark at the audience” move:

It’s enough to make Miss Ke$ha a bit emotional. Aw.

Madonna

Madonna of course, performed at the Super Bowl last year and is an enduring pop icon who also knows the secret to pulling a few funny faces on stage.

As a veteran of the pop charts you don’t want to mess with Madge. No, really. Look how angry she looks here:

You wouldn’t like Madonna when she’s angry. And you wouldn’t like her when she’s looking distraught in a retro cheerleader outfit either.

When she’s not in a proper fouler on stage Madonna knows when to bring out the ultimate sexy face. You will hear I’m Too Sexy by Right Said Fred instantly once you look at this pic:

Mariah Carey

Of course Beyoncé is a diva who can really belt out those notes. One of the ultimate vocalists is still Mariah Carey who alongside a recent judging gig on American Idol has sold over 200 million records.

Not only that but she’s not afraid of making something of a fool of herself live.

If you don’t believe us here is a picture of Mariah on stage, trying to be sexy while wearing full on ski-gear. Talk about commitment:

Of course, all that singing can talk it out on Mariah. Sometimes it looks like she is in pain from the force of HER OWN VOICE.

Even while rocking a carefree pink jumper and fashionable black headband it would appear that Mariah is in vast amounts of pain while singing. What dedication to her craft.

Girls Aloud

Of course Beyoncé roped in Kelly and Michelle at the Super Bowl for that memorable Destiny’s Child reunion. Another girl group who recently reunited our Girls Aloud who are celebrating ten years in the pop game. Ten years! Why that’s plenty of time to make a bit of a fool of yourself on stage.

The girls have always enjoyed a good hearty chuckle while performing. Well, everyone except Cheryl if this pic is anything to go by:

Sometimes Girls Aloud got very high concept, with elaborate staging and costumes that were truly hard to grasp:

OK, OK. Maybe taking pics from the groups early days isn’t fair. Maybe a few years later they’d found a sense of composure on stage. Or maybe not:

Celine Dion

Alright. Enough messing around here. We’ve been talking about pop divas unafraid to make a few funny faces on stage and we’re about to unveil the master of it. Celine Dion may be a classy chanteuse with an unstoppable voice and an air of sophistication but good God, she really can bring the crazy on stage.

We’re not joking:

Perhaps Celine is playing some kind of invisible guitar:

Or maybe Celine is picking up an imaginary weight of some sort?

Ultimately, Celine is basically screaming “Come at me bro!!” to every other pop diva who thinks they can make a weird looking face while performing. Watch your back Beyoncé
