30,000 people have signed a petition urging Channel 4 not to move forward with Famine sitcom

Petition states that famine is “no laughing matter”.

A PETITION URGING Channel 4 not to move ahead with a sitcom about Ireland’s famine has now attracted 30,000 signatures.

The petition was launched last week following news that Channel 4 had commissioned a script from Dublin-based writer Hugh Travers about the famine, which many have described as “insulting” or “insensitive”.

The petition states that famine is “no laughing matter” and states that any programme on the subject would have to contain “serious historical context” and not be a comedy.

While the script is currently only in development and has not yet been picked up to air, it has drawn ire from many.

Last week, Channel 4 defended the script, telling DailyEdge.ie that “brilliant humour” can come from “times of terrible hardship”.

It’s not unusual for sitcoms to exist against backdrops that are full of adversity and hardship.

Similarly, many on social media have also defended the sitcom amid the uproar.
