Forget boats, two GOATS are racing for Oxford and Cambridge glory

Goats, not boats.

THE OXFORD AND Cambridge boat race is celebrating 160 years on the river today but there’s a far more interesting event taking place just up the road.

Two goats are going head to head in the fifth annual Oxford and Cambridge Goat Race, in the hops of claiming glory for their respective universities.

The fundraising event – which is now in its fifth year – takes place at London’s Spitalfields City Farm. All proceeds from ticket sales go directly to the venue, to help provide for the animals in their care.

It’s a big hit with Londoners, and has already sold out ahead of today’s 3.30pm start.

Here’s how they got on last year.

Who’ll claim victory this time around?

And in case you’re worried about the goats, Spitafields City Farm have released this official statement on the official Goat Race Facebook page.

This is primarily a fundraising event where ticket sales support all the farm animals directly, with 2012′s proceeds raising enough to cover a whole year’s food bill!In recent years, we received a few complaints saying that this event is cruel to the goats, but these complaints often come from people that have never been to the event, or even visited the farm! The goats chosen to run are in good condition and health checked (foot trimmed etc) before the event.

May the best maahn win! (Sorry)
