The 22 most memorable moments from Oscars 2015

Meryl and J-Lo forever.

AS IF THE excitement of the red carpet wasn’t enough (Dakota Johnson rowing with her mamJohn Travolta trying to lob the gob on Scarlett Johansson), we had another four hours (yes, FOUR HOURS) of the Academy Awards ceremony to relish.

You can catch up on all the red carpet happenings here>

We’ve captured the essence of Oscars 2015, from crying to hip flasks to Larry the dog…

That opening number

Jack Black and Anna Kendrick joined Neil Patrick Harris for his inevitable musical opening number ‘Moving Pictures’. It was written by the pair who wrote Let It Go, so it had to be catchy.

Another white joke from Neil Patrick Harris

A lot of NPH’s jokes fell flat this year, and right out the gates he made reference once again to the #OscarsSoWhite Twitter trend.

Tonight we honor the best and whitest…I mean brightest.

It didn’t go down that well.

Cumberbatch swigging from a hip flask

We feel you B-Cumbz.

Lupita being adorable

Last year’s Best Supporting Actress winner Lupita honored Robin Williams, quoting him as she prepared to present the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor:

You’re only given a little spark of madness. You musn’t lose it.

JK Simmons’ speech

Simmons took an early lead in ‘Speech Of The Night’ as he gave heartfelt thanks to his wide and his “above average children” Joe and Olivia.

He also begged everyone to call their parents.

So go on, what are you waiting for? Ring them!

The Polish director’s speech

Pawel Pawlikowski defied the ‘play him off’ music, barrelling on through it with his endearing speech. In fact they tried to play him off twice, the lousers.

The Lego Oscar

During the frighteningly frantic performance of Everything is Awesome from The Lego Movie an actual Lego Oscar was passed around. Maybe as a nod to the fact that The Lego Movie should have been nominated for an Oscar for Best Animated Feature, and wasn’t?

Everyone just saying “f**k the music”

The winners of Best Documentary Short powered on through their ’play them off’ music too, taking inspiration from Pawel Pawlikowski.

Such a gent.

Patricia Arquette’s speech

Arquette won Best Supporting Actress for Boyhood and used her platform to say:

It’s our time to have wage equality once and for all and equal rights for women in the United States of America.

She caused Meryl and J-Lo to to this:

The ‘In Memoriam’ segment

Featuring Richard Attenborough, Mike Nichols and Robin Williams.

The ‘In Memoriam’ segment missing Joan Rivers

Rivers, who died in September 2014 was hugely associated with the Oscars, yet she didn’t appear in the montage of those who were lost in the past year.

Mashable suggests that it may have been because she wasn’t a member of the Academy. The omission has been widely discussed on Twitter though.

Everyone sharing this picture of Travolta and Cumberbatch

Even though it’s from last year’s Oscars, it remains so, so important.

The performance of Glory by John Legend and Common

This song from Selma was definitely one of the highlights of the night.

The song went on to win the Oscar for Best Original Song. Oprah held David Oleyowo, Chris Pine cried and Legend and Common got a total of three standing ovations.

oprah

But then Common did this

Common may have won an Oscar and taken part in the performance of the night, but he left Oprah hanging and for that he must now flee the country and go into hiding for at least six months.

John Travolta touching Idina Menzel face

Travolta tried to make amends for last year’s ‘Adele Dazeem’ nightmare and while he displayed a great deal of good grace by presenting with Idina Menzel, he also managed to make it weirder than even by pawing at her face.

And of course, there was this nightmare from earlier:

The brave speech by Imitation Game writer Graham Moore

It was the second mention of suicide of the night, with Best Documentary Short winner Dana Perry dedicating her award to her son who died by suicide.

And Eddie Redmayne’s acceptance speech freakout

He really couldn’t believe he’d won an Oscar.
