No stars in sight as Meteor Awards are cancelled

The Meteor Ireland Music Awards will not take place in 2011, and it’s not yet known whether they’ll return for 2012.

THE ORGANISERS of the Meteor Ireland Music Awards have confirmed that the awards will not take place this year.

In a statement this afternoon, the organisers said they had decided to “take a break, and not produce a show this year”.

“We wish to take this opportunity to thank all those who have participated in any way over the past ten years,” the statement said, adding that the awards had raised over €1m for charities.

It is not clear whether the awards are to return in 2012.

The awards, which began in 2001, have seen the likes of Muse, Elton John, Snoop Dogg, Dizzee Rascal, Amy Winehouse and the Kaiser Chiefs play in Dublin, as well as more recently helping to give prominence to Irish acts like The Script, Imelda May and Duke Special.
