stay in your lane

A busy footpath in Washington DC got a 'no mobile phones' lane

But did people actually pay attention to it?

HAVE YOU EVER been stuck walking behind someone who’s completely engrossed in their phone, moving at a glacial pace and crashing into other pedestrians?

Annoying, right? Well, a city in the US tried to change that. Tried.

Earlier this week, a footpath in Washington DC was separated into two lanes: ‘cellphones’ and ‘no cellphones’. So those who want to walk and text were supposed to use the ‘cellphone’ lane, and everyone else would take the other one.

The project was being carried out as a ‘social experiment’ for the National Geographic TV show Mind Over Masses, and a TV crew was camped out on the street to capture how people would react.

But did it work? Did a peace settle on the streets? Did the people who walk with their noses in their phones stay in their own lane? Er, no.

Unfortunately Yahoo reports that only a minority of pedestrians actually paid any attention to the divide, but a LOT of people took out their phones to take a picture. Figures.

Guess everyone is just going to have to put up with those pesky text-and-walkers a little longer. (Sorry in advance.)
