Mrs Brown's Boys had the biggest ever opening weekend for an Irish movie*

*Before inflation, anyway.

MRS BROWN’S BOYS D’Movie had the biggest opening weekend box-office numbers in this country for any Irish movie, ever.

The comedy pulled in €1.02million at Irish screens in its first weekend, according to distributors Universal Pictures Ireland, making it the biggest opener of 2014 so far.

And it handily trounced Michael Collins (€648,928) and Angela’s Ashes (€641,292) to become the biggest opening in absolute terms of all time for an Irish film in Ireland.

(After adjusting for inflation, the movie would be somewhere around third place among Irish films, according to this inflation calculator - which gives Michael Collins a 2013 equivalent of €1.2million and Angela’s Ashes €1.15million.)

Mrs Brown’s Boys success comes despite a slew of scathing reviews. RTÉ’s own reviewer called it “the least fun I’ve ever had in a darkened room”, and several critics noted “insulting” racial and gender stereotypes.

The million-plus figure makes Mrs Brown’s Boys the third largest comedy opening of all time in Ireland before inflation, behind The Hangover 2 (€1.19million) and Ted (€1.11million).

According to Rentrak.com, the film had the 11th most successful opening weekend globally, pulling in an estimated €5.7million.
