'Meat couture' Gaga claims eight at 2010 VMAs

The singer claims eight awards at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards – which proceeds without interruption from Kanye West.

LADY GAGA emerged as the biggest winner at last night’s MTV Video Music Awards, claiming an astonishing eight awards – but she distracted from her marathon awards night by wearing a bizarre dress-and-shoes combo – made entirely of raw meat.

The singer – who had been nominated for 13 awards, an all-time record – scooped seven awards for her hit ‘Bad Romance’, including Best Female Video, Best Pop Video, Best Dance Music Video, Best Editing and Direction, Best Choreography and the biggest award of the night for Video of the Year.

Her collaboration with Beyoncé, meanwhile, ‘Telephone’, won Best Collaboration.

Other winners on the night included Eminem – whose performance with Rihanna opened the awards but who did not accept his gongs, having flown immediately from Los Angeles’s Nokia Theatre to New York to play a show – and serial Twitter-botherer Justin Bieber, who was named Best New Artist.

Winners from this side of the Atlantic included Muse (best sound effects, for ‘Uprising’) and Florence and the Machine (Best Art Direction, ‘Dog Days Are Over’).

In a ceremony that was high on spectacle but short on the level of scandal that had marked previous shows – notably, last year’s ceremony was marked by Kanye West’s interruption of Taylor Swift’s award acceptance – the biggest talking point was Gaga’s strangely carnivorous costume, made entirely of red meat.

The singer – real name Stefani Germanotta – said her costume, reminiscent of her recent ‘beef bikini‘ cover shot on Vogue Hommes Japan in which she wore a meat bikini, insisted her outfit was “certainly no disrespect to anyone that is vegan or vegetarian” but added:

If we don’t stand up for what we believe in, and if we don’t fight for our rights pretty soon, we’re going to have as much rights as the meat on our bones. And, I am not a piece of meat.

She also confirmed that her next album will be called ‘Born This Way’.

The other appearance of note was that of Lindsay Lohan, who featured in a pre-recorded opening video with host Chelsea Handler.
