Oh, THAT swastika: Madonna sued over concert video of French politician

The French far-right has taken exception to having their leader’s face displayed with a Nazi symbol on the forehead.

A FAR-RIGHT PARTY in France has said it will launch legal action after Madonna showed thousands of fans footage of its leader. With a swastika superimposed on her forehead.

The National Front said the images of Marine Le Pen bearing the Nazi symbol on her face were “unacceptable”, and that it was  their “duty” to bring a legal complaint.

“A private plaintiff’s case for insult will be presented next week,” the party’s vice-president told Reuters after Madonna played a concert in Paris on Saturday.

The images appeared during a montage of footage – available on YouTube here – in which the singer’s face is merged with those of various international leaders including Pope Benedict and  China’s Hu Jintao.

Marine Le Pen’s face appears, before a black swastika is flashed up on her forehead. The face is then replaced by Madonna’s, with a Hitler moustache.

Evidently the singer has never heard of Godwin’s Law. She is yet to respond to complaints over the footage, which has been used at around the world on Madonna’s current tour.

According to the Guardian, when the swastika images first emerged Le Pen warned: “If she tries that in France, we’ll see what happens.”

She added: “It’s understandable when ageing singers who need publicity go to such extremes.”

Irish fans may get the chance to see the swastika/Le Pen montage when Madonna plays Dublin on July 24.

And for all you French speakers out there, here’s the National Front spokesperson reacting to the news:

It really is that simple, isn’t it. Irregardless of the people depicted or the politics. It is all a bit Sinéad o’Connor.

Actually Amy it is a word of sorts and has been in usage for a good few decades, might not be in a dictionary officially but we use plenty of words daily especially on the internet that are not in dictionary’s (but often eventually get added)

      Usage Discussion of IRREGARDLESS
Irregardless originated in dialectal American speech in the early 20th century. Its fairly widespread use in speech called it to the attention of usage commentators as early as 1927. The most frequently repeated remark about it is that “there is no such word.” There is such a word, however. It is still used primarily in speech, although it can be found from time to time in edited prose. Its reputation has not risen over the years, and it is still a long way from general acceptance. Use regardless instead.

So in short, it tends to be used in speech but it is certainly used

Irregardless: Irregardless is a word that many mistakenly believe to be correct usage in formal style, when in fact it is used chiefly in nonstandard speech or casual writing. Coined in the United States in the early 20th century, it has met with a blizzard of condemnation for being an improper yoking of irrespective and regardless and for the logical absurdity of combining the negative ir- prefix and -less suffix in a single term. Although one might reasonably argue that it is no different from words with redundant affixes like debone and unravel, it has been considered a blunder for decades and will probably continue to be so.

Casual writing. I just chillin baby.

  • Oi! Sinead O’ Connor was ahead of her time. She was slagging off the Catholic Church before it was fashionable to do so.

  • Madonna is such a fool. She thinks she is 21 again judging by the picture.

    Awwww… Those poor delicate little crazy-ass right-wingers!

Meanwhile, some friends say Madonna’s concert here in Portugal recently. Said it was an awesome spectacle but far far too much of it is her miming to playback and doesn’t justify the outrageous ticket prices.

whats her age got to do with it? Shes always been controversial regardless of her age. Media are very agest in their comments about her. If it was a male I doubt they would be remarking about their age!

  • Madonna did not take on the Catholic Church-she merely mocked it-which in the long run does nothing to affect change. That anyone would give her credit for acdtually making any sort of long term poitive change in any of the causes she champions shows she is brilliant in one area: realizing she can make lots of money and garner endless fame because she knows the average fan is too damn lazy to educate themselves about the true heros of change-they’d rathyer ooh and ahhh over her shallow presentations that rail in one dimensional; `shock’ tantrums. As for the comparison between Madonna and Bono-while both have massive egos it is factual to say Bono has actually educated himself on those issues which he champions-the man attended courses at Harvard and surrounded himself with people from all sides of the issues he champions. He has outgrown, by decades the need to use shallow spectacle and shock tactics to get his point across-and in doing so, in listening to and educating himself he has become a respected member of the international community helping to actually change things for the better. Madonna merely behaves as a petulent teenager and her stage antics are akin to a teenager sticking their tongue out and giving a middle finger to the grown-ups in the room. Yes, she shocks , but she is hardly taken seriously and she does not under any circumstances put in any intelectual, moral or long term effort s to change that which she rails against in her one dimensional tantrums. Anyone can shock, but very few people put in the actual long term hard work to change for the better the politics and institutions they disagree with. Flashing your tits for money is hardly ground breaking. It’s something I would expect from a desperate drunken co-ed-all `look at me! Look at me! Aren’t I liberated AND naughty?’ Eventually said co-ed matures emotionally and intellectually, though. Same can’t be said for Madonna. .
