Late Late Show

How the Late Late Show 'talent contest' sent Ireland into a massive cringe spiral

Including an RTÉ newsreader getting hit in the face by a Fine Gael senator.

LAST NIGHT’S LATE Late Show was a special Celebrity Stars In Their Eyes talent-show special.

It featured RTÉ newsreader Eileen Whelan, Fine Gael Senator Eamonn Coghlan, author Cathy Kelly and RTÉ Jr presenter (and former member of Six) Emma O’Driscoll.

And they all had to dress up and perform as a celebrity. This pretty much sums up the reaction:

Ireland cringed on its national sofas. But we DID get to see an RTÉ newsreader getting hit in the face by a Fine Gael senator.

Here’s how it went down… (In fairness it WAS all for charity – donation details here.)

Senator Eamonn Coghlan was Micky Dolenz from The Monkees, singing Daydream Believer

Newsreader Eileen Whelan was Dusty Springfield, singing You Don’t Have To Say You Love Me

Even some studio audience members were feeling the burn.

Cathy Kelly was Marilyn Monroe, singing Diamonds Are A Girl’s Best Friend

And Emma O’Driscoll was Imelda May, singing Big Bad Handsome Man

They were all very good sports about it, even when they had to sit around in their costumes.

Then to top it all off, Eamonn Coghlan whacked Eileen Whelan one in the face at the end of the show.
