John Malkovich to star in "raw" play at National Concert Hall

The Hollywood actor will play real-life poet and convicted murderer Jack Unterweger in The Infernal Comedy: Confessions of a Serial Killer

HOLLYWOOD ACTOR JOHN Malkovich is to star in a piece of musical theatre about a murderous poet at Dublin’s National Concert Hall this month.

The Massachusetts-born actor grew up in Illinois and became a professional actor in the late 1970s. He is best-known for his roles in films such as Dangerous Liaisons and In the Line of Fire – and his reputation was enough to see him immortalised in Spike Jonze’s 1999 film Being John Malkovich.

The 58-year-old is coming to the National Concert Hall to play the role of Jack Unterweger, a real-life poet and convicted murderer from Australia, in The Infernal Comedy: Confessions of a Serial Killer. The play will be performed on Sunday 27 May at the NCH.

The play centres on what happened when Unterweger became a suspect in a major trial involving the murders of 11 prostitutes. Unterweger fled Vienna but got arrested in the US and extradited back to Austria to face his crimes.

Malkovich will be joined by the Orchester Wiener Akadmie and two sopranos, Louise Fribo and Marie Arnet, as they explore the story of Unterweger’s capture and trial.

Simon Taylor, CEO of the National Concert Hall, said:

This is an exciting departure for The National Concert Hall to be presenting such an eclectic and raw musical theatre piece starring the internationally renowned and charismatic John Malkovich. Having played in more than 65 movies as well as directing and producing film, Malkovich is undoubtedly one of the most important actors on the screen today and we are thrilled that he will be performing on our stage.

During his performance as Unterweger, Malkovich will interact with the audience and tell them the ugly and sordid details of his former life as a murderer.

The play will also feature music from the likes of Gluck, Boccherini, Vivaldi, Mozart, Beethoven, Haydn and Weber throughout.

Tickets can be booked at the NCH box office on 01417 0000 or online. Tickets range from €45 – €70 or €40.50 – €63 for concessions.
