THE LIFE OF Jesus will be retold in a new musical that uses the songs of Britney Spears to narrate the story.
Called Spears, the musical has no dialogue except for Britney songs – whose lyrics have not been changed.
According to the press release:
The musical tugs at the heartstrings of America’s lost twenty-somethings, calling on familiar hits [...] to describe the birth, life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
The Spears website showcases song lyrics with photos from the set, including:
‘My loneliness is killing me’
‘I will be there’
Among the hits used to tell the story of the carpenter who was also the son of God are Baby One More Time:
(You Drive Me) Crazy:
and Stronger:
Spears made its first appearance at Columbia University in New York last year. However, producers are now looking for a bigger stage.
They want to take it to Broadway – but have not yet secured the necessary copyright to Britney’s songs. So they’re staging a preview at a smaller theatre in the hope of attracting funding.
